Immediate danger

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999 or 112 now. 999 and 112 are the UK emergency numbers for police, ambulance, fire or another life-threatening emergency. GOV.UK explains 999 and 112.

Urgent mental health support

If you need urgent medical or mental health help but it is not a 999 emergency, use NHS 111 online or call 111. For urgent mental health help, call 111 and select the mental health option. NHS guidance says to call 999 or go to A&E if you or someone else is in danger. Read NHS urgent support guidance.

Listening support

If you need to talk to someone now, contact Samaritans on 116 123, free, any time, day or night. You can also contact Shout by texting SHOUT to 85258 for free, confidential 24/7 text support in the UK.

Domestic abuse or sexual violence

If you are experiencing domestic abuse, call 999 in an emergency. For confidential domestic abuse support, contact the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247, freephone, 24 hours. If you think your device is being monitored, use a safer device or exit the website safely.

If something sexual happened without your consent, or you are unsure, contact the 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line. Call 0808 500 2222 or use online chat. This is support, not an emergency service; call 999 if you are in immediate danger or need urgent medical help.

Homelessness and rough sleeping

If you are sleeping rough or worried about someone sleeping rough in London, use StreetLink. StreetLink can connect people sleeping rough with outreach and local support. StreetLink is not an emergency service; call 999 if urgent medical attention is needed.

If you are homeless or at risk of homelessness, contact your local council's Housing Options team. You can use GOV.UK find your local council. Shelter England also has an emergency housing advice helpline on 0808 800 4444, currently listed as Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.

Safeguarding adults

If you are worried that an adult is being abused, neglected or exploited, contact the person's local council adult safeguarding route. If there is immediate danger or urgent medical need, call 999. For non-immediate safeguarding concerns, use the local council route and ask for adult safeguarding or adult social care.

Language, silent calls and BSL

If English is not your first language, tell the 999 or 101 operator your language, or say your country, so an interpreter can be requested. For NHS 111, call 111 and ask for an interpreter.

If you cannot speak safely during a 999 call, call 999. If calling from a mobile and you cannot speak, press 55 when prompted so the call can be transferred to police. Police.uk explains silent 999 calls.

If you use BSL, use 999 BSL for emergency BSL access. For NHS 111, use NHS 111 SignVideo.
